Renewable Energy: Are We Doing Enough?

Last week we published an article that outlined the UK Government’s commitment to offshore renewable energy production. Although these resources clearly show that the UK is committed to this particular type of renewable energy production, it seems like there are severe gaps in our commitment to other types of energy production.

In a recent article in The Guardian, Ashley Seager highlights how far behind we are. Though the government is putting a lot of resources into developing our national renewable assets, we are falling behind our European neighbours when it comes to small-scale energy production. Germany, who has implemented some innovative incentives to help people manage their own energy production, gets 25% of its energy from renewable sources. In the UK we get less than half of that.

Part of the reason for these figures is that Germany has made it affordable and practical for companies and individuals to implement renewable energy sources themselves. Now, companies and individuals are able to generate energy at a fraction of the cost of the major energy companies. It’s completely changing the way people are viewing renewable energy and could lead to some exciting developments in coming years.

Though it does seem that the UK does have a long way to go in terms of renewable energy production, it’s not all bad news. If you were to take the figures for Scotland alone, they are actually almost identical to those of Germany!

The key similarity between Germany and Scotland is the widespread implementation of small-scale wind and solar energy production. Though this does seem to be the key to finding an alternative to fossil fuels, it does present a possible problem. Due to the widespread uptake of these new technologies, and the unique skills needed to maintain and repair them, we could face a skills shortage in coming years as all of these small-scale installations are due for maintenance or replacement.

At M&A Engineering we regularly assist our customers in the maintenance and repair of their wind turbines. We are able to work on all types of installation, from small-scale plants to large offshore developments. If you’d like any more information about our renewable energy machining services, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
