The oil and gas industry plays a major role in all of our lives. It provides the raw materials that make our clothes, cars and hundreds of other items that we use on a daily basis. As well as the ‘products’ it helps create; it’s also responsible for powering our cars, equipment and homes. As it stands, we’d struggle to survive without the raw materials that the oil and gas industry provides.

For the UK, the oil and gas industry also plays a crucial role in growing our economy. It total, the UK oil and gas industry currently employs hundreds of thousands of people and makes a major financial contribution to the UK economy.

Despite it’s crucial role in providing jobs, materials and revenue that benefits the whole of the UK, most people still hold a very negative view of the oil and gas industry. It’s clearly very important that we find alternatives to fossil fuels during the next few years. Unfortunately, most people see the oil and gas infrastructure that we have here in the UK as part of the problem. In reality, this infrastructure is actually proving to be part of the solution.

Part of the Solution

The most important contribution that the UK oil and gas industry is making towards the move towards more sustainable energy production is in the form of experience, skills and expertise. With the development of offshore wind resources and the rapid implementation of in land renewable energy infrastructure, we need an immediate supply of highly skilled engineers with very specific knowledge. In most cases, this expertise and experience has come from the offshore oil and gas industry.

Another way that the oil and gas industry is helping the UK meet its carbon goals is by helping with the capture and storage of carbon dioxide. Though many people don’t realise it, it’s actually possible to reduce the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by storing it underground. The best way to do this is to use depleted gas and oil repositories. This is currently something that’s being undertaken by the oil and gas industries in the UK using the same skills, resources and infrastructure that removed the oil and gas in the first place.

Over the next few years the UK is going to face a serious challenge in meeting its environmental obligations. What’s clear is that the oil and gas industry isn’t the problem, but a key player in finding the solution.

We regularly complete machining tasks in both the oil and gas, and renewable energy industries. If you’d like more information about the work we do, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
