Alignment errors between the gearbox coupling and inboard and outboard Cutlass Bearing Housings were the suspected cause of excessive vibration and bearing wear.

M & A designed and manufactured special optical target holders that located in either end of the bearing housings, and concentric with the gearbox coupling.

The alignment results indicated the inboard housing was indeed misaligned with the centreline of the prop shaft.
M & A line bored the Ø140mm x 410mm long housing bore to correct the alignment error.

On completion of the repair, the Pendennis engineers commented that the alignment was now so perfect; that -
"The propeller shaft can now be easily turned by hand".
